Characters on Parade

One hundred ninety-two wooden spoon characters have been displayed along the corridor on the Library floor. As students visit the library, we have overheard many comments and enthusiastic remarks about the variety of characters and the creativity invested by the families who contributed. If you still have a spoon at home, it is not too late to bring it in to be hung up on parade. Come up and see the beautiful creations for yourself!

Can you identify these characters?

Zug Campus Book Fortnight

Dear Parents,

This year Book Fortnight is November 19th to November 30th. The following events have been planned for students and families to celebrate literature and promote a love of reading.

Artist-in-Residence: Rather than having an author visit this year we will explore storytelling through art. Local artist Joanna Gray will work with all primary students to create literature-related artwork for the library.

Characters on Parade: This year, students can work at home to create a book character using a wooden spoon. The spoon characters will replace the student dress-up parade, and will be displayed “on parade” in the school. Further instructions will be included when spoons are distributed. This is an optional event and students may collect spoons and information in the library from November 19th onward.

Sponsored Read: During the fortnight, students are encouraged to read to raise money for school charities NAG and the Cedar Foundation. Students sign up sponsors for number of books or number of minutes read. The Sponsored Read form is attached to this letter. The primary assistant principals have promised to do something exciting, hilarious, and a bit outrageous –they will spray their hair blue at an assembly if participation reaches a high level. So we hope to have lots of students participating this year!

‘Get Caught Reading’ display: Families, teachers, and students are encouraged to photograph each other being caught in the act of reading. We would love to celebrate the enjoyment your families have with literature. If you can please take photos of your family members getting caught reading, we will make a whole school display. Photos may be brought or emailed to the library: libraryzug@iszl.ch

D.E.A.R. time: One class is assigned to ring a bell a special time each day. When students in grades Kindergarten – 5th hear the bell, they must Drop Everything And Read! For fifteen minutes.

Book Quizzes: Students in grades 1 to 5 will participate in game show-style book quizzes to see how much they know about the books they have been reading.

Special Story Time: Students in Preschool to Kindergarten will have special story time visits from members of the leadership team and other staff they do not have a chance to see often.

Book character class visits: Each Preschool to Kindergarten class will have a one-day visit with a book character. The classes will be encouraged to share about their day with the character through writing, drawing, and photography. A compilation of these experiences will be shared at a future assembly.

Please contact a member of the library team if you have questions about Book Fortnight. We look forward to two weeks of book celebrations!

Preschool and Pre-K Outdoor Literacy: Storytelling with a Stick

After reading stories about the wild woods and climbing trees, we walked around the garden gathering interesting items on our playdough-covered sticks. We returned to our den in the garden and told the story of our found items.

"It’s a stick person from a book. There’s a book called Stick Man. That’s why I wanted to make a stick person. He’s really strong and he can jump. He can jump from branch to branch."

"The pinecone fell from the tree. The leaf stayed in the tree. The flower fell down from the tree. I picked the thistle because I liked it."

"I have a leaf. I have a flower and I have an angel. The angel is here to stick. Nobody brought it to the garden. The leaves fell. There are 1,2,3,4,5,6. They are wet because of the rain."

"My stick has a pinecone. It fell down because if the branches move they fall down."

Author Andy Mulligan Visits ISZL middle school

We are honored and excited that Andy will be here on campus Sept. 12th and 13th. He will be working with all English classes during his busy two days.
His book "Trash" was one of the Battle of the Book Books last year.  With over 60 students having read this gripping mystery about the dump children of Manila the discussions should be lively.

Find out more about Andy Mulligan and his work!

Ice Cream Party Fun

Summer Reading Ice Cream Party.

Thank you to all the many incredible volunteers and staff that helped at the ice cream party! It would not have been such a wonderful success without all your efforts. We appreciate you!

The First Annual Summer Reading Challenge Ice Cream Party turned the Foyer of the Baarburg Theatre into an Ice Cream Parlor for the afternoon of August 31st 2012. Students, parents and staff all enjoyed the celebration by creating ice cream sundaes and taking about books they read this summer. With students on the Zug Campus completing over 4,000 hours of reading this summer we had much to celebrate.  The Summer Reading Challenge was a huge success and we look forward to next year.

The Summer Reading Challenge was offered for the first time at ISZL as a way to celebrate reading even during the summer holidays. Students of all grades could choose to complete a game board over the summer by reading specified amounts of time. The game board was returned to school this fall and all participants invited to celebrate their reading achievement by coming to an ice cream party. We had much to celebrate at the ice cream party with over 300 students participating and over 4,000 hours of reading done this summer.

The completed games boards were also put into three draws based on the grade of the student for age appropriate exciting prizes: This years winners are:
The winner of the 10 passes to Planeta Magic is Teun in 1st grade
The winner of the draw for 4 passes to AlpaMare (Grades 2-5) is Kara in 5th grade
The winner of the draw for 4 passes to AlpaMare (Grades 6-8) is Annebelle in 6th grade

We congratulate everyone on an incredible summer of reading.
