Fiction books are separated into four colour-coded areas to help students in the selection of materials. The coloured dots on the spines of the books are meant to guide patrons towards content that is appropriate for their age, as follows:
Green Dots are suited to students in EY – Grade 1
Blue Dots are suited for students in Grades 1-3
Yellow Dots are suited for students in Grades 3-6
Red Dots are suited for students in Grades 5-8
How to read a call number:
F = Fiction (JF in the Junior Library)
# = Non fiction
For example:
A spine label for the book Harry Potter would read:
F ROW (first three letters of the author’s last name)
A spine label for a book on dinosaurs would read:

Patron use of materials
Students may borrow library materials for a period of one week. The number of books a student may borrow varies by grade, as follows:
Early Years 1 and 2, Kindergarten, Grade 1: one book
Grade 2: two books
Grade 3-8: three books
This includes books borrowed for class reading, such as Literature Circle books.

Families are welcome to open an account with a member of the library staff. Families may borrow up to 10 books for two weeks.

Browse and Borrow
EY1 and EY2 students will come on a fixed weekly basis to exchange and borrow books with their teachers and/or teaching assistants. There is a special section in the Junior Library for EY1 and EY2 students to browse and borrow from. We also encourage parents to bring their children at anytime to enjoy the collection or to participate with their EY1/EY2 child in Community Story time.

Kindergarten students come to the library on a regularly scheduled day each week with their Assistant Teacher to browse and borrow from the Junior Library collection as well as have an information literacy lesson with the teacher librarian for this grade.

Grade 1 to Grade 5 class teachers are active participants in all browse and borrow sessions with their class at least once a week. This is a great opportunity for them to learn more about what students are reading and what new materials are available.

Grades 6 to Grade 8
There is a MS Book Mobile located on the ground floor of the Baarburg (the 6th grade English Room) Students are welcome to select and return materials daily during homeroom time. English classes also come over about once a month to select new personal reading materials. Students are welcome everyday before/afterschool and lunch breaks too.

During Browse and Borrow, teachers and librarians:
·       Encourage thoughtful book selection
·       Assist students in finding materials
·       Review with students, as needed, the finding of a book using Destiny and skills attained during information literacy lessons
·       Review, as needed, how to read a call number and “read” the shelf
Students are expected to:
·       Use shelf markers
·       Put books back on shelf properly (spine facing out) after browsing the collection
·       Use appropriate library manners and voice tone
·       Put returned book on the return shelf - spine out and on the right colour shelf

Overdue/Lost Materials
Printed overdue notices are distributed to students every month. Patrons are responsible for the materials borrowed in their name. Replacements costs for lost or damaged materials range in price from 5-40CHF depending on type and age of the materials.

Break time in the library
Students in Middle School may come to the library for lunch break.

Students in Grades 2-5 may come to the library during lunch break.

·       They must have a library tag from their class teacher

·       No more than 2 tags per any class to be given out during lunchtime, as space is limited

·       In order to balance fresh air and fitness and relaxing reading time library staff will work together with class teachers to discuss any students that we see using the library without balance.

Frequently Asked Questions:

May I borrow books over the holidays?
Yes! Families may borrow up to ten books over any school break. Please keep the books in Switzerland to avoid loss.

Do you have books for parents?
We have books on many parenting topics in the Senior Library. We also have a cabinet in the corridor for parents to exchange novels and family DVDs.

Can a student borrow from any fiction area?
The dots on the spines of the fiction books are meant to guide patrons toward content that is appropriate for their age. Please work with a librarian if your child wants to borrow from another area.

Can parents use the library during the school day?
The library is a busy place during the day, and while we would like to welcome all our community members into our space, the classes and teachers take priority during our busiest times. If the librarians are working with students, please return after school to complete your transactions.

May I donate books to the library?
Yes! Any donations we cannot use in our library are donated to charity.

What is Community Story Time?
Community Story Time is an event offered through the ISZL Zug Library for children enrolled in half-day EY1 and EY2 and their families. This library programme, led by a teacher‐librarian, is offered as an opportunity for young children to spend time listening to stories, singing songs, and engaging in activities with a parent or caregiver. Younger children are welcome to attend the event with their Preschool or Pre-K sibling.
Do you have levelled readers?
There is a section in the Junior Library called ‘easy readers’ that contains books that are levelled by their publisher. These levels are not the same as the home reader books that come home with your child from the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher is the best source of information about the reading level of your child.
