Dear Parents,
This year Book Fortnight is November 19th
to November 30th. The following events have been planned for
students and families to celebrate literature and promote a love of reading.
Artist-in-Residence: Rather than having
an author visit this year we will explore storytelling through art. Local artist
Joanna Gray will work with all primary students to create literature-related
artwork for the library.
Characters on Parade: This year, students
can work at home to create a book character using a wooden spoon. The spoon
characters will replace the student dress-up parade, and will be displayed “on
parade” in the school. Further instructions will be included when spoons are
distributed. This is an optional event and students may collect spoons and
information in the library from November 19th onward.
Sponsored Read: During the
fortnight, students are encouraged to read to raise money for school charities
NAG and the Cedar Foundation. Students sign up sponsors for number of books or
number of minutes read. The Sponsored Read form is attached to this letter. The
primary assistant principals have promised to do something exciting, hilarious,
and a bit outrageous –they will spray their hair blue at an assembly if participation
reaches a high level. So we hope to have lots of students participating this
year!
‘Get Caught Reading’ display: Families, teachers, and students are encouraged to photograph each other
being caught in the act of reading. We would love to celebrate the enjoyment
your families have with literature. If you can please take photos of your
family members getting caught reading, we will make a whole school display.
Photos may be brought or emailed to the library: libraryzug@iszl.ch
D.E.A.R. time: One class is
assigned to ring a bell a special time each day. When students in grades
Kindergarten – 5th hear the bell, they must Drop Everything And Read! For
fifteen minutes.
Book Quizzes: Students in grades
1 to 5 will participate in game show-style book quizzes to see how much they
know about the books they have been reading.
Special Story Time: Students in
Preschool to Kindergarten will have special story time visits from members of
the leadership team and other staff they do not have a chance to see often.
Book character class visits: Each Preschool to
Kindergarten class will have a one-day visit with a book character. The classes
will be encouraged to share about their day with the character through writing,
drawing, and photography. A compilation of these experiences will be shared at
a future assembly.
Please contact a member of the library team if you have questions about
Book Fortnight. We look forward to two weeks of book celebrations!
